Dental Bridge Framingham MA

There are many ways in which a person can lose a tooth. Tooth decay, periodontal disease, and injury are just a couple of ways. The good news is that patients have several options for replacing a missing tooth. One good option is a dental bridge, particularly if multiple adjacent teeth are missing. A bridge is a teeth replacement option that consists of a dental crown on opposite ends with a pontic tooth in the middle. The pontic can be made from gold, porcelain, alloys or a combination of these materials. Depending on your situation, your dentist can attach a dental bridge to existing teeth or dental implants.

Dental Bridge Process

The process for getting a dental bridge requires two visits. During the first visit, your dentist will prepare the abutment teeth. This involves removing some enamel and recontouring these teeth so they can be properly fitted for a crown. Your dentist will then take impressions of the teeth to create a model for the bridge, crowns, and a pontic. You will receive a temporary bridge to protect your teeth until the next visit. At the second visit, the temporary bridge will be removed and you will be given your new bridge. It will be adjusted as needed so it fits well in your mouth. Since it may adjust over time, your dentist may have to wait a few weeks before permanently cementing the bridge in place.

Types of Dental Bridges

  • Traditional bridge. This is the most common type of bridge. It requires creating a crown for the teeth on both sides of the missing tooth, with a pontic in between. They are typically made of porcelain fused to ceramics or metal.
  • Maryland bonded bridge. This type of bridge, also called a resin-bonded bridge, can be made of porcelain, porcelain and metal, or plastic teeth and gums with metal framework. Metal or porcelain wings are bonded to the existing teeth.
  • Cantilever bridge. These bridges are not that common anymore, especially for the back of the mouth, where other teeth can become damaged. It is used when there are adjacent teeth on only one side of the missing tooth.
